SteelABILITY at U. S. Steel
The mission of SteelABILITY is to foster an environment where employees with disabilities, as well as employees who care for people with disabilities, feel empowered to bring 100% of themselves to work. We do so by advocating for and empowering individuals, increasing understanding of disability related issues, and promoting inclusion and respect within both U. S. Steel and our communities.Employee Spotlight

A Message from the Senior Vice President – Chief Communications Officer
Tara Carraro
When I heard about SteelABILITY’s focus on neurodiversity, I knew I had to join and support its mission. I am the mom of a child with what used to be called Asperger’s, a condition on the autism spectrum. Asperger’s is usually characterized by a high degree of intellect but is often accompanied by social and communications challenges. For any parent of a child with a disability, you ask yourself, “Will they be able to function on their own someday and be a contributing member of society?”
In school, my son was given a lot of support. Fast forward 16 years, and he is a first-year student at Georgetown University. He is also an Eagle Scout, a third-degree blackbelt in Taekwondo, a member of the National Honor Society and started his own organization to help veterans. He is fully engaged in campus life and thriving. While he still receives some support at Georgetown, he is succeeding on his own. He craves structure, gets irritable when his plans are disrupted, and likes to work on one task at a time, completing it before he moves on to the next. He likes to direct conversations back to his interests, and he can get overloaded with too much visual and auditory stimuli.
What could an employer do to help accommodate someone like my son who has a tremendous intellectual gift, but may not always operate just like everyone else? An ideal work environment would be a private office where he can close a door and adjust the light. If possible, his boss may want to consider giving him plenty of notice on any schedule changes. A supervisor could also help him organize his work by laying out clear expectations and priorities in the form of written or verbal instructions. I firmly believe that my son would be an incredible asset to any organization. He works harder than anyone I know, never letting his challenges deter him. He is self-motivated, highly ethical and kind. While we have always taught our son that he will need to adapt to the world around him, wouldn’t it be great if other forward-thinking companies like U. S. Steel could meet him halfway?
