ADVANCED HIGH-STRENGTH
STEEL
U. S. Steel leadership in Advanced High-Strength Steel (AHSS) offers two clear benefits to customers: Expertise and choice. Delivered with American commitment.
Here, you’ll find the most advanced of all advanced high-strength steels - 980 XG3™ steel, along with a full range of Dual Phase AHSS products. We combine this product breadth with decades of industry experience applied with a highly collaborative, intensely customer-centered approach to provide an AHSS offering that’s second to none among steelmakers.
ADVANCED HIGH-STRENGTH STEEL PRODUCTS
FEATURES
U. S. Steel's 980 XG3™ steel is the most advanced of Advanced High Strength Steels (AHSS) in the market today. This is our Generation 3 steel. XG3™ steel delivers high strength and high formability, and adapts to your current processes without compromising weldability. It’s designed specifically to provide automakers with the most cost-effective material to design safer and lighter vehicles.
High Strength and Formability
With the strength of a 980 and the formability of a 590, XG3™ steel sets an entirely new standard for AHSS. XG3™ steel’s high-strength design provides efficient load paths that absorb energy in crash situations. And its next-gen formability reduces the amount of material needed, lowering costs while making it easier to stamp even the most complex parts.
Performance
Make no mistake, 980 XG3™ steel has been put through its paces, achieving high scores in a variety of performance-based tests. From drop-tower crush tests to crashworthiness modeling, strength evolution to residual toughness tests, XG3™ steel surpasses conventional AHSS performance and all expectations.
Weldability
Superior weldability is another plus of XG3™ steel, delivering next-generation strength in production. Weldlobe, resistance spot-weld (RSW) joint-strength and RSW cross-section data prove it.
Minimal Manufacturing Changes
A major benefit of the XG3™ steel is that deployment doesn’t require massive manufacturing changes. XG3™ steel can replace traditional steel designs with drop-in ease and can be cold stamped in traditional mechanical presses. By contrast, press-hardened steel requires additional capital investments for long roller hearth ovens and new hydraulic presses to replace traditional mechanical presses. Aluminum requires complicated scrap-segregating strategies in the press shop, an overhaul of the entire body shop to implement riveted joints and an expansion of the paint shop.

BENEFITS
Dual Phase (DP) steels are the most widely used of all the advanced high strength steels on the market. Their ferritic–martensitic microstructure allows for both hot- and cold-rolled DP grades to exhibit a good balance of low yield, high tensile strength and good formability, while also being able to absorb large amounts of energy. This combination of characteristics makes DP steels ideal for automotive applications where crashworthiness is a critical factor.
FEATURES
Dual Phase steels by U. S. Steel are available in different strength levels that increase with the percentage of martensite. U. S. Steel offers the following DP steels available as cold-rolled (CR), electrogalvanized (EG), and hot-dipped (HD) materials. HD materials can be ordered with galvanized (free zinc – GI) or galvannealed (iron & zinc alloy – GA) coatings.
