U. S. Steel is advancing its metallics strategy by insourcing pig iron capabilities at Gary Works. The approximately $60 million investment will produce up to 500,000 tons of pig iron annually. Pre-construction is underway and pig iron production at Gary Works should begin in the first half of 2023.

Gary Works Employees Launch STEM Virtual Reading Program with Local Elementary School
Members of the Leveraging and Enhancing All Diversity (LEAD) Employee Resource Group (ERG) at Gary Works recently kicked off a new reading program partnership with their neighbors at Beveridge Elementary School. More than five truckloads of unwrapped toys were donated by Gary Works and Midwest employees and delivered to Toys for Tots this past holiday season. The effort was led by the local Human Resources team and the local chapter of the company’s (Strengthening and Enhancing Relationships of Veteran Employees (SERVE) Employee Resource Group, with support from its six other ERG local chapters.SERVE ERG Raises More Than $27K for Disabled and Homeless Veterans
The Northwest Indiana chapter of U. S. Steel's Strengthening and Enhancing Relationships of Veteran Employees (SERVE) Employee Resource Group hosted charity gate collections at the company’s Gary Works and Midwest Plant to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Patriot Day on Sept. 11. Fifty volunteers stationed at 10 different gates across two plants on a single day received employee donations totaling $12,680. Plant leadership has generously agreed to donate an additional $15,000, bringing the grand total to $27,680.Gary Works Presents $100,000 Check to Methodist Hospital
In March 2023, Gary Works Vice President Dan Killeen and Gary Works employees presented a check for $100,000 to Methodist Hospital to mark their 100-year anniversary.Both U. S. Steel and Methodist have served the Gary community for a century. This donation will support Methodist Hospitals’ compassionate care for patients throughout the region.
