Made in Indiana

At U. S. Steel, we believe our business thrives when we are actively engaged and involved in the communities where we make steel.

More than 4,300 hardworking indiviuals are employed at the Gary Works. Many of them reside in or near Gary, Indiana and Portage, Indiana.

At U. S. Steel, we firmly believe that we are only as strong as the communities that we live and work in, and we deeply value our relationship with Indiana.

Gary Works is the Ream Team for SteelSUSTAINABILITY’s 2025 Sustain X Initiative

SteelSUSTAINABILITY is proud to spotlight the first completed project in its 2025 “Sustain X” initiative—another paper shredding and recycling event at Gary Works that made a major impact.

In total, the team shredded and recycled an impressive 3,682 pounds of paper—nearly triple the amount collected during last year’s event. Employees were encouraged to declutter both their professional and personal spaces, reinforcing the idea that sustainability starts with small, intentional actions. Congratulations to the Gary Works team for setting the tone for a greener, more organized 2025!

In addition to collecting hundreds of toys for children in Northwest Indiana, employees donated $9,550.68 for the Marine Corps Reserve’s annual Toys for Tots campaign! A check was presented to Toys for Tots to purchase any additional toys needed to make Christmas special for deserving local children.

U. S. Steel Donation Establishes Marine Unit for Porter County Sheriff’s Office

The Marine Unit will patrol waterways, ensure boating safety, and conduct search-and-rescue operations. The unit will collaborate with marine units from Lake County Sheriff’s Office, LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office, Indiana Department of Natural Resources, and the United States Coast Guard. The goal: work together to ensure the waters of Lake Michigan and the shorelines that surround them are safe for all local residents, including U. S. Steel employees and their families.

With our Midwest Plant located in Porter County and our Gary Works in neighboring Lake County, the donation aligned with our desire to focus on the areas where our employees live and work as well as our “Safety First” S.T.E.E.L. Principle.
