U. S. Steel’s Mining Solutions produces high-quality taconite pellets for use in blast furnace operations. Located in the ore-rich Mesabi Iron Range in northern Minnesota, our Minntac and Keetac mines give us up to 22 million tons of pellets annually, plus about 1.3 million-ton annual capacity through joint-venture ownership in a mine in Hibbing, Minnesota.

Mining Solutions is composed of Minnesota Ore Operations, as well as U. S. Steel’s ownership interest in one joint venture. Mining Solutions has a combined annual capability of just over 23 million tons. Our high-quality taconite pellets range from standard acid pellets to high-grade flux pellets containing approximately 65% iron.

U. S. Steel’s Minnesota Ore Operations are located on the Mesabi Iron Range in northern Minnesota. It includes two facilities: Minntac in Mountain Iron and Keetac in Keewatin. At these facilities, iron-bearing rock called taconite is mined and processed into iron ore pellets used in the steelmaking process. Annual production capability at Minntac is approximately 16 million tons of pellets, while Keetac can produce approximately 6 million tons of pellets each year.

HIBBING TACONITE COMPANY

PARTNERING FOR ADDITIONAL CAPACITY.

U. S. Steel’s involvement in iron ore mining includes a 14.7% ownership interest in Hibbing Taconite Company in Hibbing, MN. Hibbing’s rated annual production capacity is approximately 9.1 million tons of iron ore pellets, of which our share is about 1.3 million tons.
