BENEFITS

We help our customers power the future. Motor lamination steel by U. S. Steel is a specialized cold-rolled sheet product manufactured with properties that maximize the performance of electro-magnetic core materials used in electrical equipment components. Motor lamination steels minimize energy losses from the electrical energy input into motors.

FEATURES

Our motor lamination sheets are cold rolled, below its recrystallization temperature, which enables better control over the product shape, thickness, dimensions and surface finish.

We manufacture a range of steel grades where the primary distinguishing feature is a specified Core Loss requirement. Each grade is supplied in the semi-processed, un-annealed condition and must be annealed after punching the laminations to develop optimum magnetic properties.

APPLICATIONS
  • Large and Small Electric Motors
  • Generators
  • Ballasts
  • Transformers

BENEFITS

Home appliances are more than an essential part of our homes. They’re an essential part of life. VITRENAMEL™ Steels by U. S. Steel optimize the application of porcelain or vitreous enamel coatings and are manufactured with specialized properties that can achieve both good formability and enhanced aesthetics. Our steel products are cold rolled, producing a high quality finished surface to exceed our customers' requirements.

FEATURES

U. S. Steel produces three grades of steel that optimize the application of porcelain (or vitreous) enamel coatings that (1) resist fish-scaling during the enameling process, (2) resist carbon boil during enameling, and (3) provide the sag resistance needed during the firing process.

All VITRENAMEL™ grades typically are furnished with a rough matte finish to improve adhesion of the enamel coating. The approximate surface roughness is 55 to 90 micro-inches. A rougher surface finish, 90 to 150 micro-inches, can be provided if required for a specific application.

The dimensional tolerances for VITRENAMEL™ Steel Sheet products are the same as those for Cold Rolled Steel Sheet as established by ASTM.

APPLICATIONS
  • Stove Tops
  • Oven Cavities
  • Home-laundry Appliances
  • Hot-water Heater Tanks (glass-lined)
  • Cookware
  • Chemical Processing Containers
PRODUCTS

VITRENAMEL™ 1 Steel

Ideal for applications that require a single, decorative porcelain cover coat, VITRENAMEL™ 1 steel features a very low carbon content achieved by means of a decarburizing anneal during manufacture and can be porcelain enameled either by a one-coat process, a multiple-coat process, or a wet slurry. While the steel may exhibit some loss in strength after firing, the degree of loss in strength is influenced by the severity of the formation and the actual time/temperature cycle used during the firing process.

VITRENAMEL™ 2 Steel

VITRENAMEL™ 2 Steel also has low carbon content with the addition of alloying elements achieved during steelmaking. This steel is not given a special decarburizing anneal following the cold rolling operation, making it suitable for a porcelain application of either a single ground coat or multiple coats. This product does not perform as well as VITRENAMEL™ 1 for the application of a single decorative cover coat.

VITRENAMEL™ 3 Steel

VITRENAMEL™ 3 Steel is an extra deep-drawing,fully stabilized steel that is made by utilizing vacuum degassing during steelmaking to reduce the carbon content to very low levels, and then adding stabilizing elements that combine with the interstitial elements to make an “interstitial- free” product. VITRENAMEL™ 3 Steel has good sag resistance, excellent formability and is intended for parts that involve very severe drawing during manufacture. VITRENAMEL™ 3 steel is the ideal option for ground coat and cover coat enameling applications.

BENEFITS

Cold-rolled full hard unprocessed sheet by U. S. Steel is the option to choose for applications that require very limited bending and/or roll-forming.Supplied directly from the cold-reduction mill without any annealing to soften the steel, our full hard sheet is highly work-hardened and exhibits a high resistance to denting, with only minimal ductility. The hardness is Rockwell B 84 minimum.

FEATURES

Since the product is supplied directly after cold rolling without further processing, our full hard cold-rolled unprocessed sheet is not subject to the same product standards that have been established for other cold-rolled sheet products. We provide it with a matte or smooth surface finish produced on the cold reduction mill.

APPLICATIONS

Used as a base material in applications that do not require any formability beyond very limited bending and/or roll-forming.

ORDERING INFORMATION

Definitive shape standards have not been established for cold-rolled full hard sheet. However, further processing through a tension leveler can improve the shape so that the product shape will normally meet the ASTM specification (A568) for cold-rolled flatness. If further processing is required to flatten the strip to apply oil or to remove off-gauge material, cold-rolled full hard processed sheet must be ordered.

U. S. Steel produces cold-rolled full hard sheet to either nominal or minimum thickness. For nominal orders, the thickness tolerances are plus and minus around the ordered thickness. For minimum thickness orders, the thickness tolerance is all plus (/nothing under the minimum specified).

Surface Treatment
Our standard practice is to provide cold-rolled full hard sheet product with the residual cold-mill rolling oil on the surface. Any other customer requirement will entail special processing steps and added production cost.

Special Processing
Special processing can be applied to full hard sheet products. These include recoiling to remove off-gauge at the coil ends and tension leveling to improve shape. Also, a rust-inhibitive oil can be applied. However, this entails an additional processing step such as temper rolling, recoiling or tension leveling. If the product is ordered tension-leveled or cropped back to gauge, a rustinhibitive oil can be applied at the same time. This product is ordered as coldrolled full hard processed.

Steel Designations and Chemistry
If the purchaser of cold-rolled full hard sheet plans to further process the product such as by annealing to soften the product or apply a hot-dip coating,it is important to order the proper steel chemistry. The steel chemistry can be specified to allow the customer to meet the end-desired mechanical properties. Also, if U. S. Steel is made aware of the end application and the additional processing practices being planned by the customer, the proper chemistry can be selected by the producing mill. For example, if the product will be hotdip galvanized and the final application requires that the steel exhibit extra deep-drawing properties (EDDS), the steel can be melted to provide a vacuumdegassed, fully stabilized product. Or, if the final product requirement is to meet the ASTM Structural Steel (SS) Grade 40, the alloying additions made during steelmaking can be properly selected.

ASTM Specifications
There is no ASTM product specification that covers all cold-rolled full hard sheet products, per se. However, the general requirements of ASTM A568 are applicable with several exceptions.

ASTM Structural Steel (SS) Grade 80 described in Specification A1008 is often processed identically to cold-rolled full hard sheet product. Thus, the term “full hard” is often used to describe that product. In effect, the product attributes of Grade 80 and cold-rolled full hard sheet are similar. However, if additional processing (annealing, hot-dip coating, etc.) is planned by the purchaser, special steel chemistry considerations beyond the requirements of Grade 80 product will usually be required.
