Community Engagement
CONNECTING COMPANY
AND COMMUNITY.
At U. S. Steel, we believe our business thrives when we are actively engaged and involved in the communities where we make steel.
Just as U. S. Steel is strategically focused on the company’s future, we are committed to strengthening the future and livability of communities that we call home, some for more than a century.
We take pride in the communities that are home to our operations. From employees’ volunteer work to corporate contributions; from partnering in support of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education to awarding scholarships, we are engaging and supporting our neighbors and employees to strengthen our communities.
U. S. Steel’s contributions to community organizations and activities support a range of causes. The primary goals of our contributions: to positively impact the communities that U. S. Steel calls home, to enhance and improve quality of life in those communities, and to support projects and opportunities that advance safety, education and environmental stewardship.
In addition to the STEM area, the "Sons and daughters scholarships" program is a powerful example of a meaningful initiative through which U. S. Steel promotes and advances education. This competitive scholarship program supports the higher education and career goals of U. S. Steel employees’ children who attend a two- or four-year college or university or vocational-technical school in the United States. Scholarships are awarded by a third-party administrator based on applications submitted.

Forging Futures: Supporting STEM in Our Communities
At U. S. Steel, we believe in the power of STEM to shape the future. That’s why we proudly support programs that connect students with real-world science, technology, engineering, and math experiences.
Steelers STEM Day: Our employees joined forces with the Pittsburgh Steelers to bring STEM learning to life at South Allegheny Middle School. Through hands-on activities and engaging discussions, students explored how STEM drives innovation in both sports and industry.
Engineering Student Tours: In April 2024, five engineering students from the University of Alabama toured our Fairfield Tubular and Tubular Steel Operations facilities. The visit offered a behind-the-scenes look at our advanced manufacturing processes and included a Q&A lunch with plant leaders, where students explored topics like artificial intelligence and career opportunities in steel.

Planting Trees
Trees bring cooling shade, improve air quality and protect soil and biodiversity. In projects organized by the SteelSUSTAINABILITY ERG at our Mon Valley Works, in partnership with Tree Pittsburgh, employee volunteers helped plant trees on behalf of local communities in 2024. And in October, employees planted 40 bald cypress, chinkapin oak and swamp white oak trees at a popular park in West Mifflin near our Irvin Plant. Also in 2024, we continued to support the Arbor Day Foundation. According to the foundation, U. S. Steel’s support has led to the planting of 4,630 new trees, which will lead to sequestering an estimated 2,478 metric tons of CO2, avoiding 352,074 gallons of water runoff and removing 12 tons of air pollutants. Big River Steel Works’ Environmental Department planted trees on Arbor Day in collaboration with the Osceola (Arkansas) Parks and Recreation Department. Big River Steel Works also planted 54 trees to mark the 54th anniversary of Earth Day. And USSK managers planted linden trees in April 2024 along the driveway of the main U. S. Steel facility — adding to the 2,500 poplar, beech and linden trees USSK had already planted in the area in 2024.

Corporate Contributions to Education
Reading Champions
The Reading Champions program, partnered with the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, is providing profound impact to our Pittsburgh community by improving student reading literacy in the Mon Valley communities as we finish our fourth season in March 2025. Since launching in 2021, over 1,600 Mon Valley third graders have participated in the program. Students have logged more than a combined 1.8 million minutes of reading, a figure that’s growing fast.

Making Waves for Inclusion: U. S. Steel Joins the Polar Plunge
U. S. Steel proudly supports Special Olympics Pennsylvania through active participation in the annual Polar Plunge—one of the organization’s largest and most impactful fundraisers. Since its inception 15 years ago, the event has grown steadily in both popularity and donations, surpassing $1 million in 2024. Demonstrating our commitment to inclusion and community, members of our Commercial team took the plunge and raised nearly $7,000 to help empower athletes across the state.
