DRIVING AUTOMOTIVE
ADVANCEMENT.

Our Automotive Research and Technology Center brings extensive industry-specific experience, expertise and lab resources together with a collaborative approach to support automaker advancement and success.

U. S. Steel's Automotive Center conducts customer application research, test services and development projects to support advancement in materials, technology and manufacturing in the automotive industry. These projects are often carried out jointly with our customers and our Advanced Applications Technology staff in our Product Technology group. Projects cover a variety of areas in forming/stamping, advanced material characterization, structural analysis/testing, advanced CAE applications and technology development.

Our labs have been accredited by the American Association for Laboratory Accreditation (A2LA) within the field of mechanical testing. U. S. Steel's broad and extensive laboratory capabilities include:

  • The CAE Laboratory, where our engineers use computer simulation to assess the feasibility of a material design.
  • The Mechanical and Material Test Laboratory, where advanced tests are performed to assess forming processes and material characteristics.
  • The Metallography Laboratory, where our highly qualified laboratory personnel perform metallurgical analysis using sophisticated methods.
  • Laboratory Services, where we can help you with your testing and research needs by viewing project examples.

TEST MATERIALS SAMPLE BANK MACHINE SHOP

The machine shop at the Automotive Center laboratory supports test specimen preparation needs for the Material Test Lab, Mechanical Test Lab and Metallography Lab. In addition, the shop consists of a CNC milling machine that is linked to a CAD/CAM workstation. The designed tools/dies from the CAD workstation can be directly linked to the CNC machine through CAM and the tool/die can be milled from the machine.

U. S. Steel maintains a sample bank of various products and sizes for trial or sample purposes. If you are interested in obtaining a sample or running a trial with a certain material, please contact us in the form below.
