At U. S. Steel, we believe our business thrives when we are actively engaged and involved in the communities where we make steel.
More than 4,300 hardworking individuals are employed at the Gary Works. Many of them reside in or near Gary, Indiana and Portage, Indiana.
At U. S. Steel, we firmly believe that we are only as strong as the communities that we live and work in, and we deeply value our relationship with Indiana.

U. S. Steel is committed to
environmental excellence
Environmental excellence is a core part of U. S. Steel's commitment to Gary and Northwest Indiana. Proposed improvements at Gary Works would add new emissions controls to reduce emissions intensity, capture more dust, reduce natural gas usage, reduce flaring and replace older equipment with more efficient technology.
U. S. Steel maintains a greater than 99% compliance rate
with environmental regulations and permit requirements.
HOT STRIP MILL | MODERN FURNACES THAT USE LESS FUEL
New hot strip mill furnaces are expected to use 40% to 50% less natural gas per ton of steel and reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by over 650 tons per year.
New walking beam furnaces will replace older hot strip mill furnaces with more efficient technology.
RH DEGASSER | EXPANDED PRODUCTION
Steel shop improvements, including an RH Degasser, will expand Gary Works' ability to produce high-performance steels for automotive, electrical and other specialized applications.
EMISSION REDUCTION PROJECTS
REDUCING SULFUR DIOXIDE AT BLAST FURNACE NO. 14
A new control system is expected to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions intensity by approximately 45%, with up to 450 fewer tons of sulfur dioxide per year at full operating capacity.
CAPTURING MORE DUST AND FINE PARTICLES
New collection equipment and upgrades at the Recycling Plant are expected to reduce particulate matter by more than 100 tons per year, including reductions of PM10 and PM2.5.
USING MORE ENERGY PRODUCED ON SITE
By using more blast furnace gas as fuel across the plant (including in our boilers), we rely less on additional natural gas and decrease excess-gas flaring. These changes will reduce NOx and PM2.5 at the site.
IN THE COMMUNITY
Gary Works is the Ream Team for SteelSUSTAINABILITY’s 2025 Sustain X Initiative
SteelSUSTAINABILITY is proud to spotlight the first completed project in its 2025 “Sustain X” initiative—another paper shredding and recycling event at Gary Works that made a major impact.
In total, the team shredded and recycled an impressive 3,682 pounds of paper—nearly triple the amount collected during last year’s event. Employees were encouraged to declutter both their professional and personal spaces, reinforcing the idea that sustainability starts with small, intentional actions. Congratulations to the Gary Works team for setting the tone for a greener, more organized 2025!
Gary Works and the Midwest Plant Raise Over $9,000 for Toys for Tots!
In December, U. S. Steel Gary Works and the Midwest Plant hosted a gate collection for Toys for Tots. In addition to collecting hundreds of toys for children in Northwest Indiana, employees donated $9,550.68 for the Marine Corps Reserve’s annual Toys for Tots campaign! A check was presented to Toys for Tots to purchase any additional toys needed to make Christmas special for deserving local children.
U. S. Steel Donation Establishes Marine Unit for Porter County Sheriff’s Office
The Marine Unit will patrol waterways, ensure boating safety, and conduct search-and-rescue operations. The unit will collaborate with marine units from Lake County Sheriff’s Office, LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office, Indiana Department of Natural Resources, and the United States Coast Guard. The goal: work together to ensure the waters of Lake Michigan and the shorelines that surround them are safe for all local residents, including U. S. Steel employees and their families.
With our Midwest Plant located in Porter County and our Gary Works in neighboring Lake County, the donation aligned with our desire to focus on the areas where our employees live and work as well as our “Safety First” S.T.E.E.L. Principle.
