Real choices for today's customers. That's what the multi-billion-dollar Big River 2 expansion means to the American steel market. If you’re in the market for flat-rolled steel, there's almost nothing you can't get from U. S. Steel's Big River Steel Works now that BR2 is complete and online. We’re ready to roll with the capacity, the capabilities, and the optionality that allows customers to reimagine their procurement strategy.

Thin gauge hot-roll that’s changing the game
It starts with our new Endless Strip Process (ESP) line, which is the only one of its kind in North America. The ESP can produce hot-rolled steel at 0.030 band, a gauge more commonly found in cold-rolled products.

These coils have exceptional uniformity, not only within the coil, but also from production run to production run. Customers can now explore ordering hot-rolled steel where they would normally order cold-rolled product. For example, if you’re in the construction market, hot-roll from the ESP is suitable for purlins, which is traditionally a cold-rolled product.

Bottom line: The ESP allows us to provide a stronger, lighter, more ductile, and more durable steel without extra transportation, processing and other barriers to getting consistent, high-quality product when you need it most.

Enhanced capabilities for multiple markets
The message from customers is clear: The steel mill that has the most enhanced capabilities makes for the most appealing supplier. Big River Steel Works already had a strong offering of world-class finishing capabilities. Now we’re even more differentiated and customer-centric.

We’ve added a third advanced continuous galvanizing line (CGL) at BR2 and a paint line at BR1 to create superior coils for everything from purlins to solar frames to grain bins, to a variety of automotive, appliance and construction applications. Doing more on our end frees you up to focus on your process, your product and your customers.

Custom steels for automotive
Between our NGO electrical steel line at Big River 1 and the lines at the Big River 2 expansion, we can supply high-quality, highly differentiated steel—at scale—to the automotive markets. But this is a bigger story than volume.

The ESP line unlocks unprecedented customization for customers who need unique solutions. For example, we’ve already run trials for substrate with high formability requirements like automotive stamping. And because the ESP line is a caster and hot rolling mill combined, we test and learn quickly. Which makes it perfect for experimentation and innovation.

Certified sustainable steel
As the appetite for data centers grows, so does the demand for energy to power them. This includes renewables such as solar, which depend on steel for its infrastructure. Thanks to our BR2 expansion, we’ve enhanced our ability to deliver sustainably produced, corrosion-resistant steels for solar racks and frames. We’re committed to meeting the needs of the evolving energy market, while also serving customers who want ResponsibleSteel™-certified products for other applications.

Supply chain resiliency at scale
With the completion of the Big River 2 expansion, the capacity of the entire mill has doubled to 6 million tons from 3 million tons. As customers begin to explore Big River’s unique capabilities, they can also look forward to a partner that can produce highly engineered, sustainably made steel in quantity. That’s big news for planning, strategy, and production.

The complete Big River Steel Works is also a more robust and reliable partner. The additional capabilities not only increase production but also create redundancies. We now have multiple production paths to manufacture our products, which boosts supply chain stability.

Expanded markets
And we're not just inviting customers to reevaluate what's possible. We're doing the same work ourselves. Thanks to this final round of updates and improvements, U. S. Steel is pursuing new growth strategies for the automotive, construction, solar and agriculture markets.
