Celebrating Strength

Two Column

A Legacy Forged in Strength.
A Future Forged Together.

On February 25, 1901, a bold idea became reality: to build the steel company that would help build America.

One hundred twenty-five years later, that vision stands stronger than ever. Our steel spans the bridges we cross, strengthens the roads we travel, rises in the skylines that define our cities, powers the industries that move our economy, and supports the security that protects our freedom.

Generations of skilled men and women have poured their grit, pride, and determination into every ton. One hundred twenty-five years of showing up, doing the hard work, and building what lasts defines who we are.

But 125 years is not our destination — it is our foundation.

Today, we recommit to the bold idea that started it all: building the steel company that builds America. Powered by advanced technology. Driven by the best people in the industry. Turning complexity into capability. Turning challenges into progress.

Together, we are strengthening American steelmaking for the next century and beyond.

That’s what makes us U. S. Steel — built to endure. Built to lead.

125 Years in Motion

What Makes Us: Bill

At U. S. Steel's Mon Valley Works - Edgar Thomson Plant, Bill is a third-generation steelworker doing his part every day at Pennsylvania's last operating blast furnace steel facility. For Bill, the job has always been about more than steel. It's about the people standing next to you, the opportunities this industry creates for families, and the pride that comes from being part of something that has stood the test of time. At a place where history is made daily, Bill knows that the bonds forged on the floor are just as strong as the steel itself.

What Makes Us: Anna

At U. S. Steel's Big River Steel Works, Anna joined before the facility was even operating, betting early on what she knew would be something great. Today, as a Production Shift Supervisor in Finishing, she leads her team through one of the most technologically advanced steelmaking operations in North America, where safety comes first and the people are everything. For Anna, the coworkers she oversees aren't just colleagues. They're family.

What Makes Us: Colin

Colin has spent his entire career at the same facility where his father once worked, a place he stood outside as a child, curious about what happened within its walls. That place is U. S. Steel's Gary Works. As Director of Quality Assurance, he has watched the company grow and transform, always finding that when challenges arise, the team steps up and sees it through. For Colin, helping ensure the quality of steel that touches people's lives every day at one of America's most iconic manufacturers is what makes it all worthwhile.

What Makes Us: Showing Up for Each Other

Across facilities and functions, U. S. Steel employees share a common belief: no one does this alone. In this compilation from our 125th anniversary series, team members from across the company reflect on the relationships, trust, and mutual accountability that carry them through every shift. From the plant floor to company headquarters, their stories reveal that at U. S. Steel, showing up for each other is not just a value … it's what makes us.

What Makes Us: Sarah

At U. S. Steel's Research & Technology Center, Sarah develops the advanced steels found in everyday products such as the appliances that make everyone’s lives easier – including hers! She takes pride in seeing U. S. Steel's work out in the world, knowing the products she helps create and improve are closer to home than most people realize. For Sarah, the strength of U. S. Steel comes from the people around her: a team where everyone contributes something different because collaboration is what drives real solutions.

What Makes Us: Yesenia

Yesenia grew up in South Chicago with U. S. Steel's former South Works mill visible from her street. Once she joined the company's Gary Works in nearby Northwest Indiana, she knew it was the right place for her. As Coordinating Manager of Plant Warehouses, she leads a team that keeps operations moving by making sure every department has the parts it needs, when it needs them. For Yesenia, the work is personal on every level: her husband and grandfather worked in steel, she has inspired her uncle to join, and she brings her daughters to the mill so they can see what she does. Built on 125 years of people showing up and supporting one another, U. S. Steel is not just her workplace. It is her family.
