U. S. Steel Foundation Awards College Scholarships to Employees’ Children
PITTSBURGH, July 5, 2023 – United States Steel Corporation (NYSE: X) announced the awarding of college scholarships to 20 students across the country. All the recipients are children of U. S. Steel employees. The scholarships are funded by the United States Steel Foundation.

Steel Senior Vice President and Chief Strategy & Sustainability Officer Richard L. Fruehauf, who also serves as Chair of the U. S. Steel Foundation’s Board of Trustees. “At U. S. Steel, our commitment to employees extends beyond our facilities. That commitment includes the families of those we rely on each day and the communities where they live. The scholarship recipients represent the next generation of leaders who will shape our world, and we are pleased to stand with them as they take the next step in their academic pursuits.”
Since 1995, the U. S. Steel Scholarship program has awarded more than $4 million to more than 500 children of both represented and non-represented employees across the company to support their higher education goals. Scholarship recipients are selected based on academic achievements, leadership and participation in school and community activities. This is one of the many ways in which we demonstrate our deep appreciation for our workforce.
This year, the U. S. Steel Scholarship program awarded twenty, $10,000 awards ($2,500 per year renewable for up to four years) to current high school seniors. All winners will be enrolled full-time in an accredited two- or four-year college or university or vocational-technical school in the United States for the 2023-2024 academic year.
Two additional scholarships - the Maverick Award and Trailblazer Award - were established in 2023 in honor two U. S. Steel retirees. The Maverick Award is given in honor of Barry Melnkovic, retired Senior Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer, to a student dedicated to advancing diversity, equity and inclusion either in study or extracurricular activities. The Trailblazer Award is given in honor of Christie Breves, retired Executive Vice President of Business Transformation, to a female student pursuing a career in business or finance and who advocates for women. The recipients receive a one-time $5,000 scholarship in addition to the U. S. Steel Scholarship for a total of $7,500.

• Colton Ball graduated from Rivercrest High School and plans to enroll at Arkansas State University.
Fairfield Tubular Operations
• Layla Fondren graduated from Oak Grove High School and plans to enroll at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Gary Works
• Olivia Burkett graduated from North Judson-San Pierre Junior/Senior High School and plans to enroll at Ball State University.
• Makenlie Hamlin graduated from Portage High School and plans to enroll at Saint Mary’s College.
• Kayla Mabon graduated from Merrillville High School and plans to enroll at Indiana University-Purdue University. Mabon is the recipient of the inaugural Maverick Award.
• Zachary Mueller graduated from Morgan Township High School and plans to enroll at Purdue University.
• Grace Sauter graduated from Crown Point High School and plans to enroll at the University of Saint Francis.
• Ava Wilson graduated from Lake Central High School and plans to enroll at Purdue University.

• Carson Ott graduated from Freeburg High School and plans to enroll at the University of Missouri: Columbia.

• Ali Iqbal graduated from Woodhaven High School and plans to enroll at Wayne State University.

• Yesenia Galvan graduated from East Early College High School and plans to enroll at the University of Houston-Downtown. Galvan is the recipient of the inaugural Trailblazer Award.
• Desmond Rubio graduated from Bellaire Senior High School and plans to enroll at the University of Alabama.
The U. S. Steel Scholarship program is administered by Scholarship America, a non-profit scholarship management organization. This year’s recipients represent U. S. Steel locations in Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, and Texas.
