Clairton City School District and U. S. Steel Celebrate Grand Reopening After Major Renovations

PITTSBURGH, August 9, 2021 – On August 11, Clairton City School District and United States Steel Corporation (NYSE: X) (“U. S. Steel” or the “company”) will celebrate the grand reopening of the Clairton Education Center. After the challenges of the pandemic and flooding, this is a major milestone for Clairton’s students, teachers, and families.

U. S. Steel employees assisted with the reopening by working to update, repair and provide other renovations to the middle and high school levels of the Clairton Education Center.  Volunteers from U. S. Steel’s Mon Valley Works and corporate headquarters, as well as Avalotis Corporation, dedicated more than 2,000 hours this summer, painting hallways and the high school gymnasium, restoring office space, and installing carpet in time for the start of the academic year.

Over the past year, Mike Rhoads, plant manager of Mon Valley Works’ Clairton Plant, worked closely with Clairton City School Superintendent Dr. Ginny Hunt to expand U. S. Steel’s support and engagement efforts with the school.

“This fall, our middle and high school students will return to a brighter, freshly painted and updated school building. The hallways, offices, gymnasium, and library have a new look thanks to the many U. S. Steel volunteers who have worked diligently all summer to make this happen,” said Dr. Hunt. “I am extremely grateful for this work which would not have been possible without the strong commitment from Mike Rhoads and his team at Clairton Plant. We are a proud partner in improving our community.”

In addition to these volunteer efforts, U. S. Steel provided a $25,000 grant to support Chromebook purchases for virtual learning in the Spring of 2020. Other initiatives between the school and U. S. Steel include the Junior Achievement Program, the Steelers STEM collaboration, and Project Homework Help.

“Clairton Plant has over 120 years of history in this city, and supporting our community has been instilled in me since I started my career here at Clairton in January of 1994,” said Rhoads. “The past year and a half has been a challenging time in all of our lives, but through the dedicated efforts of so many of our colleagues who willingly gave their time and effort, we were able to bring this project to fruition, so that Clairton students and staff have a safe and functional environment.”

On August 11, 2021, there will be a grand reopening of the school and information day where parents and students are invited to see the school, meet teachers, and receive schedules. Representatives from U. S. Steel and local officials will be at the event to meet with community members and discuss the renovations.

Members of the media are welcome to join for a private tour and interviews from 9:30 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. on August 11 at Clairton City School District Education Center - 502 Waddell Ave. Clairton, Pa. 15025.
