United States Steel Welcomes President Trump to Granite City Works

PITTSBURGH, July 27, 2018 – Yesterday, United States Steel Corporation (NYSE: X) was honored to welcome President Donald J. Trump to its Granite City Works facility in Granite City, Illinois. U. S. Steel has a long history of welcoming elected officials, including presidents, to its facilities. President Trump delivered remarks on trade, highlighting the facility’s restart of all iron and steelmaking operations.

In addition to delivering his remarks, President Trump toured Granite City Works’ hot strip mill with U. S. Steel President and CEO David B. Burritt and Senior Vice President – Industrial, Service Center and Mining Solutions and Interim Head – Tubular Douglas R. Matthews. The hot strip mill is where the finishing process begins in steelmaking as steel slabs several inches thick are reheated and then rolled into steel sheets that are fractions of an inch thick.

Speaking to a crowd of U. S. Steel employees, members of the Granite City community and local officials, Trump said: “I'm thrilled to be here in Granite City with the incredible men and women of U. S. Steel.”

Trump continued, “For more than a century, the workers here at the Granite City mill helped build the most powerful and prosperous nation ever to exist on the face of the earth. They poured the sweat from their brows and the love from their souls to support their families."

"We also know our steel industry is vital to our security and our prosperity. If you don't have steel, you don't have a country."

Addressing Granite City Works employees, Burritt said, "It does indeed feel like a renaissance here for U. S. Steel. We are so glad you are back working safely. We can do this. We can have steel that's mined, melted and made in the USA."

During his remarks, President Trump invited four U. S. Steel employees, Neal Whitt, Bobby Ellis, Tony Zadolek and Patricia Bertrand, to share what the restarts have meant to them and their families.

In addition to President Trump, the event was attended by Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross; Labor Secretary Alexander Acosta; and U.S. Representatives Mike Bost and Rodney Davis of Illinois.
