U. S. Steel Earns Mansfield Certification for Progressing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Legal Department

PITTSBURGH--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- United States Steel Corporation (NYSE: X) (“U. S. Steel”) today announced that it has earned the highly respected Mansfield Certification, an accreditation awarded to a small group of companies who successfully improve the diversity profile of their corporate legal departments. Developed and presented by Diversity Lab, the certification recognizes U. S. Steel’s commitment to expanding the pool of qualified talent considered for leadership, including to historically underrepresented individuals, and providing transparency to advancement pathways.

“U. S. Steel’s commitment to inclusivity and equity drives continuous progress on our journey to encourage and support diversity at all levels of our organization. Earning Mansfield Certification marks a significant step toward accelerating our ability to open doors to historically underrepresented individuals in the legal field,” said Mona Dine, General Manager, Human Resources & Chief Diversity Officer at U. S. Steel.

Building on its foundation of a strong ethical culture and Best for All® business strategy that prioritizes investing in and supporting a diverse workforce, U. S. Steel began pursuing the certification by implementing a prescribed behavioral science and data-driven approach to thinking broadly whenever new leadership positions become available. The company then successfully demonstrated progress across several specific data points related to increasing diversity and inclusion in their talent pipeline for internal positions and outside counsel roles.

“At U. S. Steel, we believe diversity and inclusivity enhance our ability to innovate. Mansfield Certification is one more way we are expanding our thinking and our talent pool whenever new leadership positions become available – not only on our legal team, but across all levels of our organization,” said Duane Holloway, Senior Vice President, General Counsel, and Chief Ethics & Compliance Officer at U. S. Steel.

Since 2017, just over 350 of the country’s leading law firms and legal departments have participated in Mansfield Certification. Designed to ensure lawyers of all backgrounds have a fair and equitable opportunity to advance into leadership roles, the name of the certification is a tribute to the first female in the U.S. to be sworn in as a lawyer, Arabella Mansfield, and was inspired by the Rooney Rule, which esteemed Pittsburgher Dan Rooney helped pilot.
