Summer Food Program Provides Free Healthy Food to Hundreds of Children in Clairton
PITTSBURGH, July 29, 2020 — The American Heart Association and U. S. Steel are working together to improve the health of our communities through The Summer Food Program. Healthy grab and go meals that include breakfasts and lunches are being delivered to kids across Clairton, five days a week throughout the summer.
Proper nutrition and access to healthy options are essential in building healthier communities. Hunger can double an individual’s chances of developing diabetes among other health issues such as obesity and cardiovascular disease. In Clairton, 81% of kids qualify for free/reduced lunches, therefore, there is a significant need to reach these children during the summer months.
“U. S. Steel is proud to partner with the American Heart Association to support children in the Mon Valley communities where our employees live and work. These meals and activities will ensure children will remain active and healthy,” said Kurt Barshick, General Manager, Mon Valley Works. “We are pleased to lend our support during this challenging time and into the coming year.”
“In order to improve the health of our communities, we need to create health equity for everyone. One of the many factors that strongly influence a person’s health is access to nutritious foods, said Deb Banks, executive director, American Heart Association, Greater Pittsburgh. “With the support of U. S. Steel, we have a tremendous opportunity to impact the lives of thousands of community members through healthy food access.”
In addition to healthy grab and go meals, activities and resources to promote physical activity are provided such as yoga mats, jump ropes, mini vegetable growing kits and more.
The Summer Food Access Program in Clairton is also in partnership with the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank and the Clairton School District. The program runs through August 7, 2020 and will resume June 2021.
