PITTSBURGH, June 1, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, United States Steel Corporation (NYSE: X) President and Chief Executive Officer David B. Burritt announced the appointment of Barry Melnkovic as Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer. Melnkovic, who will be based at U. S. Steel's Pittsburgh headquarters, will report to Burritt and join the company's executive management team.
In this position, he will be responsible for all facets of the company's human resources division as well as labor relations.
"Barry's proven record of success in human resources and labor relations for several prominent manufacturers and other heavy industries, coupled with his extensive transformation experience, made him the ideal person to fill this important role," Burritt said. "He is a seasoned leader with a proven record of implementing and executing operational excellence with a focus on continuous improvement. We appreciate his longstanding commitment to safety in the workplace and look forward to utilizing his expertise on our executive team as we accelerate our asset revitalization efforts and realize improvements in safety, quality, delivery and cost."
Previously, Melnkovic served as Executive Vice President and Chief Human Capital Officer for National Railroad Passenger Corporation / Amtrak as well as serving as an Officer and member of the company's Executive Committee. During his tenure, he developed and executed Amtrak's human and labor relations strategies for the company's large workforce. He established an enterprise-wide lean six sigma function and developed a culture of continuous improvement. His leadership contributed to the company accruing record savings. He designed and implemented short and long term incentive programs and received recognition for its innovative change and talent management practices including hiring veterans.
In October 2016, he was named the 2016 HR Executive of the Year by Human Resource Executive magazine.
Melnkovic is a native of Windber, Pa., and a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, where he received his B.A. in Economics with honors. He received a Master's of Science in Human Resources from Rutgers University.
