PITTSBURGH, June 23, 2020 – United States Steel Corporation (NYSE: X) announced the award of college scholarships to thirty-five students across the country.  The scholarships are funded by the United States Steel Foundation.

Steel Scholarship program allows us to recognize the remarkable achievements of the outstanding children of our valued employees,” said U. S. Steel President and Chief Executive Officer David B. Burritt. “At U. S. Steel, our Culture of Caring not only extends to our employees, but also to their families, the communities where we operate and the next generation of leaders. We are proud to recognize these students and wish them the best in their academic pursuits.”

Since 1995, the U. S. Steel Scholarship program has awarded nearly $4 million to more than 400 children of employees across the company to support their higher education goals. Scholarship recipients are selected based on academic achievements, leadership and participation in school and community activities. This year's winners were selected from a pool of 462 applications, a record high for the program.

This year, the U. S. Steel Scholarship program offered two types of awards: a $10,000 award ($2,500 per year renewable for up to four years) for current high school seniors, and a one-time, non-renewable $5,000 award for students who graduated from high school when the program was closed from 2017 through 2019. All winners will be enrolled full-time in an accredited two- or four-year college or university or vocational-technical school in the United States for the 2020-2021 academic year.

The recipients of the $10,000 awards and their area of study are as follows:

• Hollie Bekeske, an incoming freshman studying physical therapy at Maryville University of St. Louis. She attended Staunton High School and is representing Granite City Works in Granite City, Illinois.
• Kate Biddle, an incoming freshman at the University of Pittsburgh majoring in biology. She attended Thomas Jefferson High School and is representing Mon Valley Works’ Clairton Plant in Clairton, Pennsylvania.
• Breena Burgstaler, an incoming freshman majoring in nursing at Central Lakes College. She attended Aitkin High School and is representing Minnesota Ore Operation’ Keetac in Keewatin, Minnesota.
• Madison Clayton, an incoming freshman majoring in psychology at Midway College. She attended Bloomburg High School and is representing Lone Star Tubular Operations in Lone Star, Texas.
• Joseph Feltz, an incoming freshman studying animal sciences at the University of Missouri: Columbia. He attended Christian Brothers College High School and is representing Granite City Works.
• Luke Hanlon, an incoming freshman majoring in business at Indiana University Bloomington. He attended Crown Point High School and is representing Gary Works in Gary, Indiana.
• Megan Kotsonas, an incoming freshman majoring in business at Oakland Community College. She attended Lakeland High School and is representing Great Lakes Works near Detroit, Michigan.
• Katherine Maloney, an incoming freshman majoring in chemical engineering at Penn State University Park. She attended Seneca Valley High School and is representing the company’s corporate headquarters in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
• Massimo Menna, an incoming freshman majoring in secondary education at Siena Heights University. He attended Airport Community High School and is representing Great Lakes Works.
• Patrick Minda, an incoming freshman majoring in atmospheric science at Penn State Fayette. He attended Elizabeth Forward High School and is representing Mon Valley Works’ Edgar Thomson Plant in Braddock, Pennsylvania.
• Andrew Nelson, an incoming freshman majoring in civil engineering at University of Minnesota: Duluth. He attended Mountain Iron-Buhl Secondary High School is representing Minnesota Ore Operations’ Minntac in Mt. Iron, Minnesota.
• Emily Ploskina, an incoming freshman majoring in engineering at the University of Pittsburgh. She attended Peters Township High School and is representing the company’s corporate headquarters.
• Megan Steinhiser, an incoming freshman majoring in biology at Earlham College. She attended Michigan City High School and is representing Gary Works.
• Lauren Thompson, an incoming freshman majoring in biochemistry at Loyola University Chicago Lakeshore Campus. She attended Valparaiso High School and is representing Gary Works.
• Thomas Wilbert, an incoming freshman majoring in computer science at the University of Alabama. He attended Fultondale High School and is representing Fairfield Tubular Operations in Fairfield, Alabama.

The recipients of the $5,000 awards and their area of study are as follows:

• Briahna Bell, an incoming junior majoring in elementary education and special education at Seton Hill University. She attended Elizabeth Forward High School and is representing Mon Valley Works’ Clairton Plant.
• Devyn Dahl, an incoming junior majoring in elementary education at the University of Wisconsin – Superior. She attended Mountain Iron-Buhl Secondary High School and is representing Minnesota Ore Operations’ Minntac.
• David Dotson, an incoming sophomore majoring in music and neuroscience at College of Wooster. He attended Vermilion High School and is representing Lorain Tubular Operations in Lorain, Ohio.
• Jocelyn Evert, an incoming junior majoring in aviation flight at Ohio University. She attended Sterling Heights High School and is representing Great Lakes Works.
• Nicholas Feltz, an incoming junior majoring in mass communications and public relations at Southeast Missouri State University. He attended Christian Brothers College High School and is representing Granite City Works.
• Kade Laugen, an incoming sophomore studying psychology at St. Olaf College. He attended Mesabi East High School and is representing Minnesota Ore Operations’ Minntac.
• Julia Lutz, an incoming junior majoring in linguistics at Michigan State University. She attended Northville High School and is representing Great Lakes Works.
• Dalin McCully, an incoming junior majoring in accounting and management information systems at Purdue University Northwest. She attended Michigan City High School and is representing Gary Works.
• Chloe McIssaac, an incoming sophomore majoring in mathematics at the University of Southern Indiana. She attended Belleville East High School and is representing Granite City Works.
• Samuel Miller, an incoming freshman majoring in applied science at Bevill State Community College. He attended Hope Christian High School and is representing Fairfield Tubular Operations.
• Melissa Nelmark, an incoming junior majoring in forest management at University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point. She attended Northeast Range High School and is representing Minnesota Ore Operations’ Minntac.
• Meriam Pereira Martinez, an incoming sophomore majoring in human development and family sciences at the University of Texas: Austin. She attended Spring Early College Academy and is representing Offshore Operations Houston in Houston, Texas.
• Krystal Sorensen, an incoming sophomore majoring in elementary education at Purdue University North Central. She attended Portage High School and is representing Gary Works.
• Kaitlyn Steinhiser, an incoming senior majoring in political science at Valparaiso University. She attended Michigan City High School and is representing Gary Works.
