Prepainted Coated Sheet
| U. S. Steel Prepainted Sheet is produced by direct application
of a paint (after applying a treatment and, in most instances, a primer) onto steel
sheet in a coil-coating line. Coil-line painting can be used to apply a paint coating
directly on uncoated steel sheet or on metallic-coated steel sheet. For maximum
corrosion resistance, coil-line painting is often done on metallic-coated steels
including galvanized, GALVALUME®, and terne coated sheet. |

Prepainted, coated steel sheet offers users a unique combination of advantages: the strength
of steel, the corrosion resistance of a metallic coating and the beauty and additional
corrosion protection of paint.
U. S. Steel Prepainted Coated Sheet offers users a custom prepainted, coated steel
sheet ready for fabrication. Produced on high technology coil coating lines under rigid
quality controls, this product has a painted finish that is uniform in color, gloss, texture
and thickness, with excellent paint adhesion and durability. Today's combinations of metallic
coatings and paint systems provide corrosion resistance and formability at levels
considered impossible only a few years ago. Steel sheet can be readily rollformed, bent,
and stamped without degradation in the quality of the paint.
Prepainted steel sheet can be very cost-effective for fabricators of painted steel sheet
products. Because it requires no in-plant painting either before or after fabrication,
prepainted steel sheet eliminates the user's capital burden of paint facilities as well
as painting costs associated with the preparation, handling, spraying and baking or
drying operations. Also, the costs of meeting stringent disposal requirements for
paint chemicals are eliminated. Users of prepainted sheet can realize significant
savings in payroll, equipment maintenance, inventory, yield loss and other costs
associated with operating in-plant painting lines. Prepainted sheet also offers
the benefits of a faster and simpler operation without the worker-protection and
environmental/pollution problems that accompany painting operations.
By working closely with the paint suppliers and the coil coating industry, U. S. Steel
has assisted in the development of primers and paints that offer very excellent
qualities for the user. Paint hardness, paint gloss, resistance to chalk, fade,
and peel, paint flexibility, and other attributes of prepainted steel sheet have
been advanced to a high level of quality to enable its use for many industries
including the automotive, appliance, furniture, and construction industries.
During the past 10 to 20 years, there have been many advances in the development of
prepainted steel sheet. In order to take advantage of these technological advancements,
the user needs to take many issues into consideration. Today, these issues can be
addressed very quickly because of the long list of successful applications that have
been implemented. Questions that need to be answered include: the properties of the
steel, the type of metallic coating if any, the metallic coating thickness, the paint
attributes with respect to flexibility, hardness, chalk and fade resistance, etc. Obviously,
these decisions depend on the application and the performance desired by the manufacturer.
