RCRA Corrective Action at the U. S. Steel Gary Works Facility

RCRA Facility Investigation (RFI)

East End SWMA
The East End SWMA is comprised of approximately 396 acres consisting of wooded areas to the east and south, the West Grand Calumet Lagoon (WGCL), large material handling and storage areas, and small ponded areas. It is bordered to the east by the IDNL. The eastern end of the East End SWMA has been designated as a "Buffer Zone" between Gary Works and the IDNL. The Buffer Zone consists of approximately 90 acres along the eastern border of Gary Works and provides a 1 ,000-foot wide transition between Gary Works and IDNL.

The East End SWMA is currently used for material storage and handling. The East End SWMA has historically been used as a material storage and disposal area for the Coke Plant, the Iron Producing and Sintering Area, and the Steel Producing and Central Mill area since operations began in the early 1900s. The area also received wastes from the Sheet and Tin Mill in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Also included within the East End SWMA is one of the Interim Status RCRA- regulated units, HWD-2, formerly used for disposal of coal tar decanter sludges. The East End SWMA includes several other historical disposal areas, including the Former Garbage Disposal Area (SWMU ES3), the Refuse Landfill (SWMU ES1), Former Tar Disposal Areas (SWMU ES5A-B), the Tar Decanter Sludge Disposal Area (SWMU EA 1 ), and Pitch Handling Areas (SWMU ES6). Lakefilling, hot pour slag deposition, and slag reprocessing have also occurred in the East End SWMA.
