RCRA Corrective Action at the U. S. Steel Gary Works Facility

RCRA Facility Investigation (RFI)

COG Drip Leg Pits SWMA
Coke Oven Gas (COG) is generated by the production of coke. After ammonium sulfate, light oil and other useable by-products are recovered from the gas, COG is distributed for use as fuel through underground and overhead pipelines. COG condensate that accumulates in piping along the system is drained to COG drip leg pits located along the COG distribution system throughout the Coke Plant, the Iron Producing and Sintering area, the Steel Producing and Central Mill area, and the Sheet and Tin Mill. Concerns regarding the management of condensate at these drip pits resulted in their being designated as SWMUs by the USEPA. The COG drip leg pits are generally uniform in both structure and contents. As a result, the COG drip leg pits will be investigated on a Facility-wide basis to ensure a consistent evaluation of the system.
