Technical Services and Quality Department  - Major Facilities

Computer Facilities - The Local Area Network (LAN) consists of 150 personal computers and workstations linked together through very high speed fiber optic cables. There are multiple servers to handle e-mail, Intranet, document management, and file and print services. Electronic mail and document transfer and retrieval are major capabilities of the LAN. There is also a Wide Area Network (WAN) consisting of dedicated high speed telephone connections between the Research and Technology Center Computer Network and computer networks located in Gary, Fairfield, and the Mon Valley. The WAN facilitates the Research and Technology Center's involvement and participation in solving operational problems occurring at these plants. The U. S. Steel Research and Technology Center is also connected to the Internet through a corporate firewall. This link provides access to governmental and educational research agencies reports and papers.

Video Conferencing - A multimedia videoconference center is maintained for meetings with personnel from other U. S. Steel facilities, business partners, and customers.

Training Facilities - A multimedia purpose training room with multimedia equipment and a capacity of 28 students is available to support the on site technical training.

Knowledge Resource Center (KRC) - The Knowledge Resource Center (KRC) Facilities consist of a core collection of over 40,000 books, 200 journals, technical translations, dissertations and annual reports. The KRC has access to several hundred databases through the database services Dialog, Dow Jones Interactive and Dun & Bradstreet, as well as, electronic access to the following publications: Alloy Digest, ASM Handbook, ASTM Standards Source, ILI Metals Infobase and Thomas Register. A document management system is available to provide desktop access to U.S. Steel's research generated technical documents. With all of these resources, the KRC is able to meet the information needs of users anywhere in the Company.
