In September 2003, U. S. Steel purchased Serbian steelmaker Sartid a.d., an integrated steel producer with facilities in Smederevo and Sabac.  Now called U. S. Steel Serbia, the operation was designed to have an annual raw steel production capability of 2.4 million net tons, of which approximately one-half is currently operational. In August 2004, a project to rebuild and modernize the No. 1 blast furnace began. By mid 2005, U. S. Steel Serbia is expected to have increased production to its original design capacity. U. S. Steel Serbia primarily produces sheet products, including tin mill and galvanized products.  More . . .
