Emerging Technology

The primary role of the Emerging Technology Section is to identify, analyze and develop promising opportunities in new and maturing process and product technologies that will serve the ongoing strategic purposes of United States Steel Corporation. Scientists and engineers within the group seek to quantify and assess information and data needed for risk-versus-reward judgments for new, critical and enabling steel manufacturing capabilities arising globally.

Focus areas include alternative ironmaking, steelmaking, casting, finishing and technology-based opportunities in environmental sustainability and stewardship. The long-range, strategic fit of an emerging technology opportunity is determined by combining scientific and technical knowledge with risk-based decision analysis methods to determine its expected value and potential impact. The principal objective of the Emerging Technology effort is to support U. S. Steel’s mission to sustain and enhance our long-term position as a premier, highly respected global steel producer that creates value for our customers and shareholders.
