Anton Lukac

Anton Lukac, a native of Martin, in the Slovak Republic, graduated
from Technical University in Košice, Faculty of Mechanical
Engineering. In 1982, he joined VSZ, a diversified Slovak
corporation, as a maintenance technologist in the company’s cold
rolling mill. Over time, Mr. Lukac advanced and led the
microelectronic, technical development, engineering, and accounting
and finance departments at the company. In 1996, he was appointed
financial director of VSZ OCEL, a steel manufacturing company that
was part of VSZ Group. Mr. Lukac served as project manager for a
VSZ-U. S. Steel joint venture from 1998-1999 and was then named vice
president of technology for VSZ and chairman of VSZ OCEL.

When U. S. Steel acquired the steel operations and related assets of
VSZ Group in November 2000 to form U. S. Steel Košice (USSK), the
largest fully integrated, flat-rolled steel producer in Central
Europe, Mr. Lukac was appointed vice president for strategic
implementation and reported directly to USSK’s president. In that
position, he was responsible for USSK’s pipe and heating radiator
operations, had oversight for 18 USSK domestic and foreign
subsidiaries, supported regional development through the Economic
Development Center, and led USSK’s due diligence teams in exploring
new business opportunities for U. S. Steel in Europe.
In July 2003, Mr. Lukac moved to the United States with his family
after he was named plant manager of U. S. Steel’s Clairton Plant
near Pittsburgh, the largest and most environmentally progressive
by-product coke making plant in the Western Hemisphere. Mr. Lukac
advanced to plant manager-Edgar Thomson Plant, a primary steel
making facility that is part of the company’s Mon Valley Works, in
December 2006. He was named general manager-Mon Valley Works in
January 2007 and was responsible for overseeing operations at all
four Mon Valley Works facilities: the Edgar Thomson Plant (primary
operations) in Braddock, Pa.; the Irvin Plant (finishing) in West
Mifflin, Pa.; the Clairton Plant (coking and coal chemical
operation) in Clairton, Pa.; and the Fairless Plant (galvanizing)
near Philadelphia, Pa. He was elected to his current position in
March 2008 and is responsible for research and
development activities at the company’s Research and Technology
Center in Munhall, Pa., Automotive Center in Troy, Mich., and a
research facility in Košice, Slovakia. He also oversees engineering;
coke battery assessment, reliability and rehabilitation; and blast
furnace engineering and technology activities across the company.
Mr. Lukac is a member of the American Iron and Steel Institute, the
Association of Iron and Steel Technology, and the American Coke and
Coal Chemicals Institute.
